Richard Schaefer Honored as Recipient of 2018 IEEE Meritorious Engineering Award


Richard Schaefer, Senior Application Specialist in Excitation Systems, was recently honored as the recipient of the 2018 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Meritorious Engineering Award. Rich was recognized during a ceremony at the 2018 annual technical conference for the IEEE Pulp, Paper and Forest Industry Technical Conference (PPFIC).

Rich joined Basler in 1972 as a lab technician but quickly transitioned to a role troubleshooting and commissioning excitation systems. Since 1975, he has been responsible for excitation product development, product application, and the commissioning of many plants.

Rich has been a member of the IEEE for past 28 years and has been an active participant on the Pulp and Paper Industry Committee for 25 years. He has been a Senior Member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society for the past 17 years. In this time, Rich has authored or co-authored more than 50 technical papers on a variety of topics. His papers have been featured in industry respected journals such as IEEE Transactions and he has presented at technical conferences throughout North America. Rich served as Working Chairman of IEEE for 10 years. In this role, he was responsible for updating various IEEE specifications when they came due. In recognition of his work, he previously received a Service Award of Completion from the IEEE for his work on the IEEE 421.4 Guide for the Preparation of Excitation System Specifications.
