Emergency Shunt Trip Breaker Application

In critical applications, generator breakers are often supplied with a dc shunt trip circuit. The shunt trip, in conjunction with another power source, provides the means to trip the generator breaker when the normal power source is removed. The alternate power source is generally called an Energy Storage Device or capacitive trip device. It can trip the generator breaker via the shunt trip.
 

The Energy Storage Device is ac powered and rectified to charge a battery that charges a capacitor. When normal tripping power goes away and a critical machine trip must occur, a fully charged capacitor provides sufficient energy to trip the generator breaker and separate from the fault for up to 72 hours.
