Better Generator Protection

Inadvertent Energization

A medical facility in the southeast needed better protection for inadvertent energization than an electromechanical reverse power relay. They had experienced damage to a 4.5 MW generating unit when a circuit breaker was closed at the wrong time, energizing the unit and causing a shower of sparks and smoke.

BE1-GPS100 is available in an
S1 or H1 case to fit your application.

Basler BE1-GPS100 relays in the S1 case were installed because no cutting was required on the relay panel where the old reverse power relays were to be removed.

For a basic overview of generator protection, download the Generator Protection Application Guide. This guide was developed to assist in the selection of numerical multifunction and single function relays to protect a generator. The purpose of each relay is described and related to one or more power system configurations.

Undetected Loss of Prime Mover

A steam turbine at a distributed generation site, operating in parallel with the utility grid, suddenly lost its prime mover, the steam supply. The existing electromechanical protection failed to recognize the motoring condition, which resulted in the generator operating as a synchronous motor for an extended period of time. The thermal turbine scheme of the generator also failed to detect the motoring condition. Finally, an operator noticed the real power output at nearly zero and manually tripped the breaker between the industrial electric power system and the utility

The BE1-GPS100 provided dramatically improved reverse power protection, performance of the 32R function is an order of magnitude better than the existing previous-technology relays.

For details, see Application Note PC-GPS01 - Loss of Prime Mover: Generator Reverse Power Protection (32) Replacement Opportunities (GE Type GGP-53C and ABB Type CW)

What do you need in generator protection?

The examples above are just two of the issues you can address by installing a BE1-GPS100.

The BE1-GPS100 provides substantial functionality in a small package, useful where space is very limited but high functionality is needed. It is a multifunction, programmable numerical protection, meter, and control relay. Functions in this integrated system include:
- three phase voltage controlled
- voltage restrained or standard overcurrent
- phase residual and independent ground overcurrent
- negative sequence overcurrent
- breaker failure
- over/underfrequency
- phase over/undervoltage,
- zero sequence over/undervoltage and negative sequence overvoltage
- forward or reverse power
- loss of excitation
- volts per hertz
- sync check
- sensitive third harmonic ground fault monitoring
- breaker monitoring and control and metering functions

For more details on the BE1-GPS100, see Bulletin UHQ
