Replacing fixed dc excitation suppliers with automatic excitation control systems can avoid the problems posed by pole slip and asynchronous operation. Plus, it adds the option of using the motors to provide local var support or assisting in controlling power factor on the supply bus.

The Redundant DECS-200 offers the advantage of two digital controllers that communicate via parallel ports to maintain the generator output voltage via the field of the exciter.
