Tech Tip: Single Port USB to RS-232 and RS-485 Serial Adapters

Basler multifunction relays utilize RS-232 serial ports for ASCII communications and RS-485 for
ASCII, Modbus™ and DNP® 3.0 protocols. If your computer does not have a serial port, you will
need to utilize an adapter to provide connectivity between your computer and the relay.

If your computer has a USB port, you will need a USB adapter cable equipped with a USB type A
connector for connection to your computer and a male DB-9 for connection to the RS-232 port.
A similar USB adapter cable will be needed for the RS-485 port.

There are a variety of adapters and cables on the market. You may want to test several products
to determine the best fit for your specific computer and application. One possible starting point
in your search is ACCES I/O Products, Inc.

Protocols

The three independent communications ports along with support for Modbus™ and DNP 3, and ASCII protocols provide easy access to integrating the protection, control, metering, status reporting, and monitoring functions into a substation automation system. Click here to download a spreadsheet with all BE1 Numerical Relay features, including discrete programmable outputs.

DNP 3 Protocol
Basler Electric’s implementation of DNP (Distributed Network Protocol) V3.00 is fully compliant with DNP V3.00 Subset Definition Level 2. As a user, verification testing offers reassurance of the interoperability of certified DNP 3 products. Being able to easily integrate IEDs with a master or data concentrator on multi-drop RS485 networks reduces costs by eliminating the need for port switches and/or communications processors.

For more information, download the DNP Protocol manual for the:

Modbus Protocol
Modbus protocol was developed by Modicon for use in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

Modbus communications use a master-slave technique in which only the master can initiate a transaction. This transaction is called a query. When appropriate, a slave device responds to the query. When a Modbusmaster communicates with a slave, information is provided or requested by the master.

Modbus has gained a high level of popularity for IED implementation.

ASCII Protocol
ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It consists of a set of codes used to represent letters, numbers, control characters, and a few symbols.

ASCII data is in wide use when communicating with off-the-shelf terminal emulation programs such as ProComm Plus, Windows Terminal or Hyperterminal. Data can be sent and received from IEDs using readable pneumonic words.

For details on setup, download PC-COM01, an application note on enabling ASCII communication with a relay via Windows95™ Hyperterminal.

Firmware

Embedded firmware is the operating program that controls the actions of the microprocessor-based products. Enhancements to product functionality may make a firmware update desirable. To check your product’s latest firmware version or to request an upgrade, contact Technical Support.

BESTNet Ethernet Option

The BESTNet option connects your relays to the wired world.

BESTNet, which currently is available in the BE1-11f, BE1-11g, BE1-11i, BE1-700C and BE1-700V includes:

  • Embedded web server with metering, status, and fault summary information
  • Email alerts of as many as seven user-defined conditions
  • Full BESTCOMS support over Ethernet
  • Full Basler ASCII protocol for terminal mode communications (TELNET) or custom programmed application access
  • Support for DHCP or static IP addressing.
  • IP Discovery function included in BESTCOMS.

For more information, see the BE1-11f, BE1-11g, BE1-11i, BE1-700C or BE1-700V product bulletin.

An enhanced version of BESTNet with peer-to-peer Ethernet communication also is available in the BE1-1051.

BESTlogic Programmable Logic

In a BESTlogic multifunction relay, each of the protection and control functions is implemented as an independent function block that is equivalent to its single function, discrete device counterpart.

Programming BESTlogic is equivalent to choosing the devices required by your protection and control scheme and drawing schematic diagrams to connect the inputs and outputs to obtain the desired operational logic.

Typical Function Block

BESTlogicPlus Programmable Logic

BESTLogicPlus programmable logic provides the user with a highly flexible and easy to use visual method of configuring a protection and control system in the BE1-11 family of products. It comes standard with each BE1-11 family relay.

Each of the protection and control functions in the BE1-11 is implemented as an independent function block that is equivalent to its single function, discrete device counterpart. Each independent function block has all the inputs and outputs that the discrete component counterpart might have. Programming BESTLogicPlus is equivalent to choosing the functional devices required by your protection and control scheme and drawing schematic diagrams to connect the inputs and outputs to obtain the desired operational logic.

The BE1-11 relay can store, as user settings, one user programmable, custom logic scheme. To save time, several preprogrammed logic schemes also are provided. Any of the preprogrammed schemes may be copied into the logic settings without making any additional BESTLogicPlus settings.

BESTLogicPlus provides the protection engineer with a user-friendly means to set up this powerful multifunction system with the same freedom once enjoyed with single function, discrete devices. It is no longer necessary to compromise your standard protection and operating practices to deal with the limitations in programmability of other multifunction devices. BESTLogicPlus includes these advanced logic features: edge triggers, XOR gates, logic timers, counters, and latches.
