In 2019, an engineering consultant approached Basler wanting to utilize our SMC-250 standard solution for brushless synchronous motor upgrades at a Nevada pumping station. With seven motors (each 3,000 horsepower) at a single station, the motors drive pumps with a capacity to move millions of gallons of water per day. Basler’s family of DECS products has become a trusted, reliable part of many critical motor excitation projects.
Due to the minimal space available in existing cabinets, a modified version of Basler’s standard SMC-250 Synchronous Motor Controller chassis was designed to fit in the site’s motor control enclosures, which previously used Ampgard motor controls. DECS-250 Digital Excitation Controllers, the heart of the SMC-250 design, were separated from the chassis and supplied loose for mounting in the doors of the enclosures. After the initial seven-unit project’s success, the customer proceeded to order another 37 systems over the next 4 years for installation at their other sites, also replacing similar Ampgard brushless motor controls. There are also plans to purchase 12-16 more Basler systems for similar pumping stations, and we look forward to helping modernize these plants in the future!
